Dora Carrington (1893-1932)

Dora Carrington is one of my favourite English painters. She was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and mixed with some of the the most talented and creative people of her generation. Her lovers included the painters Mark Gertler and Gerald Brennan and (it is rumoured) Virginia Woolf. Her true soulmate and companion was the biographer and noted eccentric Lytton Strachey whom she lived with from 1917-1932.

When he died of an undiagnosed cancer in 1932 she was so devastated that she committed suicide. She left this poem in her diary:

He first deceased, she for a little tried To live without him, liked it not and died
